This broadcast segment addresses "The Stigma and Depression of Incarceration". Todays distinguished guests are Sheila Rule and Jason Davis. Sheila Rule is co-founder of the Think Outside the Cell Foundation which seeks to end the stigma of incarceration and help those with prison in their backgrounds and their families to create their own opportunities. The foundation and its publishing arm, Resilience Multimedia, have received grants from the Ford Foundation for the Think Outside the Cell Series, anthologies that feature real-life stories by the incarcerated, the formerly incarcerated and their families, and a 2011 national symposium on issues affecting this population. Resilience's first book was Think Outside the Cell: an Entrepreneur's Guide for the Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated, by Joseph Robinson, her husband, with whom she founded the Think Outside the Cell Foundation. Jason Davis, poet and parent consultant on youth self-inflicted injuries, is co-founder of TODAY (To Overcome Discrimination Against Youth), an organization that advocates and teaches the crucial awareness needed by parents to nurture their children so they don't become attracted to gang life. Jason joined the Bloods in 1995. Jason was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic and suffers from severe post traumatic stress disorder. He is a contributor to Dashaun Morris' memoir, “War of the Bloods In My Veins” (Simon & Schuster) and was featured in a public service campaign (collaboration between Stay Strong Foundation, SAMHSA and the Ad Council) designed to raise awareness about mental health problems among young adults in the African American community.
